Robert D. 'Dave' Melton

Captain Robert D. "Dave" Melton, 46, was tragically called home due to injuries he received while protecting our city on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 in Kansas City, Kansas. Born on September 7, 1969 in Kansas City, Kansas. Dave was a 1988 graduate of Fairfield High School, Landgon, Kansas and received his Bachelors of Arts Degree from Mid America Nazarene University. Dave served in the Kansas Army National Guard as an enlisted soldier from 1986 to 1997. He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the KSARNG and served as an officer from 1997 until his retirement in 2012. He served in Iraq with the Field Artillery Brigade and Afghanistan with ADT #3 and was awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, Army Commendation, Achievement, Iraqi Campaign, Afghanistan Campaign, NATO Afghanistan Service Medals and the Combat Action Badge. Dave served with the Wyandotte County Sheriff Department from 1990-1999. He joined the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department December 27, 1999. He was promoted Sergeant in 2006, the rank of Captain in 2015 and currently served as Captain in the Bureau of Operations and was a member of the Honor Guard. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Elsie Melton; two brothers, Roy and Bill Melton. Survivors include his children, Sarah Wilt, David and Elizabeth Melton; step-children, Ashley, Brad and Brian Thomas; significant other, Zeta Bates and her children, Dayton Brown, Katherine Green and unborn baby girl; ex-wife, Katie Melton; siblings, Harriet Stanley and husband Ron, Betty Ann McLaughlin and husband Bob, Larry Melton and wife Liz, Kathy Mattila, John Melton and wife Linda, Yvonne Savner and Mary Melton; many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm Friday, July 22nd at the Jack Reardon Civic Center, 500 Minnesota Ave, Kansas City, Kansas. Funeral services will be 9:30 am Saturday at the Childrens Mercy Park /Sporting, 1 Sporting Way, Kansas City, KS. Interment will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Captain Robert D.
