Reverend Frank M. Horvat, 82, of Kansas City, KS, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at Brookdale Senior Living. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 4th and Barnett, Kansas City, Kansas at 10:00 am Saturday, April 18. Burial follows at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, KCK. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday April 17, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church; rosary at 6:45 pm.
Father Horvat was born in 1932 the son of the late Bara and Matthew Horvat Croatian immigrants and founding members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He attended Bishop Ward High School, Donnelly College and St. Thomas Seminary, Denver, CO. He was ordained May 31, 1958 and offered his first Mass on June 1, 1958. Father served at many parishes in Kansas among those Queen of the Holy Rosary, Overland Park,; Holy Name, Topeka, St. John the Evangelist, KCK; St. Joseph, Shawnee; St. Columbkille, Blaine; Sacred Heart, Gardner; Holy Rosary, Wea; St. Michaels, Axtell; St. Gregorys, Marysville; Corpus Christi, Lawrence; and St. John the Baptist, KCK.
Father Horvat celebrated his Silver Jubilee at Corpus Christi, Lawrence, KS and his Golden Jubilee in 2008 at St. Johns retiring in 2011.
He served as Auxiliary Chaplin at the Naval Station in Olathe, KS. Father Horvat was recognized by the Donnelly College as a Distinguished Alumni and the North American Croatian Relief Organization for Humanitarian leadership.
He is survived by sisters, Rose Waller and Barbara Carroll, and many nieces and nephews. Father Horvat was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Thomas, Helen Horvat, Emily Sercer, Anne Theno; brothers, Michael, John, Joseph and Reverend Matt Horvat.
