Rachel M. Segura, 89, of Shawnee, KS, passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024, surrounded by family. She leaves her five devoted children: Suzanne Brooks (Dan), Julie Gregory (Kirt), Sara Podrebarac (Mike), Rebecca Swanson (Lon), and Stephan (Donna), twelve grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren (and one due in April). She also leaves her sisters Virginia Chambers and Patricia Davis, as well as her brother John Ramirez. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Raymond Sr., their son Raymond Jr., grandson Lucas, her parents Ramon and Antonia Ramirez, her brothers Tavi Ramirez, Ramon Ramirez Jr. and sisters Alicia Grado, Carmen Mott, and Elvira Ramirez.
Rachel was a devout Catholic who always put her faith in God and family first. Together she and Ray created a warm and loving home which is the heart of the family. She started work as a secretary after graduation from Wyandotte High School in 1952 at Fitts Dry Goods on 8th and Broadway in Kansas City, MO. She quit in 1958 awaiting the birth of daughter, Julie. She stayed at home with their children after that. She taught swimming (evenings and Saturdays) for 25 years, from 1973 to 1998. After their son, Ray Jr. died in 1980, she returned to office work at Wichita Outreach Office in Merriam, KS in May 1981. In September 1981, she went to work at the University of Kansas Medical Center until January 1985. While there, she advanced from Secretary to the Director of Housekeeping to Executive Administrative Assistant to Executive Vice Chancellor, D. Kay Clawson, MD.
Rachel started work at Phoenix Business Systems in February 1984 as Executive Administrative Assistant to the Owner and CEO Edward B. Kinports, Jr., MD. She retired in March 2009 at the age of 75 after 24+ years of service at Phoenix.
She will be dearly missed by many.
A Visitation for Rachel will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024 from 6:00-8:00pm, with a Rosary starting at 6:00pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 11311 Johnson Dr, Shawnee, KS 66203. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 10:00am-11:00am with a burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1150 N 38th St, Kansas City, KS 66102. Following services at the cemetery, we will have a luncheon back at the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Rd, Kansas City, MO 64145.
