Michael W. (Mike) Hammett, 78, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2021. A visitation for Mike will be held on Wednesday, April 7th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Skradski Funeral Home, 340 N. 6th, Kansas City, Kansas. Funeral Service will be Thursday, April 8th at 9:00 AM also at Skradski Funeral Home. Private family burial will be at Stony Point Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas.
Mike was born on March 22nd, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri - a fact that was somewhat recently discovered when the Vital Records Office in Topeka, Kansas informed him he was not, in fact, born in Kansas to parents Max and Martha, and big brother Dennis.
He met and later married his one true love, Judith Ann Pluta, on December 25th, 1962, a wedding date that no one was a true fan of but was undoubtedly chosen to ensure he would never forget his anniversary.
Mike served as an aerographer in the United States Navy, and had two children, daughter Chris and son Kurt, the latter of whom inherited the weather forecasting gene.
For most of his life Mike was a salesman, a fact that no one who ever met him would be surprised by. He could, and usually did, talk to anyone family, friends, waitresses, customer service reps, random strangers, babies, dogs they were all fair game. Most of his career was spent in the wholesale meat business, and he never met a pork product he didnt like. His family is certain that were there a bacon/sausage eating professional tour he would have been named World Champion and All-time MVP.
Mike loved the Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas City Chiefs, working as both a ticket taker, and in the ticket office for the Chiefs, for many years. He saw his lifelong dream come true when they won their second Super Bowl in 2020. Both his kids inherited the football gene.
When Judy passed away in 2005, it hit the family hard, especially Mike. For 43 years, she was the center of our familys world our rock. We all found a way to move forward without her as life demands, but not a day went by that Mike didnt dream about the time, God willing, theyd be reunited. It gives the family great comfort to picture them in heaven, together again, where Judy can keep him in line.
Mike is survived by his daughter and wife, Chris Hammett and Susan Pinches of Kansas City, MO, son and wife Kurt and Jennifer Hammett of Shawnee, KS, brother and wife, Dennis and Julie Hammett of Fort Myers Beach, FL, brother-in-law Tony Pluta of Roeland Park, KS and numerous, much loved, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. It would also be remiss not to mention how much Mike loved being a grandparent to all his childrens pets dogs, cats, birds, guinea pigs those left behind will miss you Grandpa Claw.
While life with Mike was always a roller coaster of ups, downs, and everything in between, he had a good heart and was a kind and loving person.
We love and will miss you Dad see you later.
