Leo F. Mcnellis

November 23, 1935 — February 9, 2017

Leo F. McNellis, 81, of Kansas City, KS peacefully passed away Thursday, February 9, 2017 at St. Lukes Hospice House surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 pm Sunday, February 12th at St. Patricks Catholic Church with the rosary at 4:00 pm. Funeral mass at 10:00 am Monday, February 13th at St. Patricks Catholic Church.
Leo was born November 23, 1935 in KCMO to James and Ethel McNellis, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years Barbara J. (Kolich) McNellis, sister Mary and brothers Jim, Joe, Francis and Pat. His brother Jack McNellis of Overland Park, KS survives. Leo is also survived by his four beloved children: Sue (Mike) Reed, Bob (Polly) McNellis, Mike (Crissy) McNellis and Paula (Gary) Gray; grandchildren: Matt, Ryan, Nicole & Caitlin; Ryan & Meghan and Adam; and great-grandchildren Leo & Wyatt and Jillian & Jayse.
Leo graduated from Bishop Glennon High School in 1953 in KCMO where he earned 12 Varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. After graduating from high school he attended Joplin Community College on a football scholarship but after one year decided to enlist in the Air Force in 1955. After leaving the service he met the love of his life in 1958 and they were married in June of 1961.
Leo worked at Vile-Goller Fine Arts Printing Company for 38 years and also owned the Gulf Gas Station at 80th & State Avenue and worked in the Sporting Goods section for K-Martall three at one point, where we still wonder when he slept. Dad also coached his kids and many other kids in football, basketball and baseballpassing along his many talents. After retiring in 1994, Dad spent the majority of his time taking Mom to all of his grandkids sporting eventswhere he very seldom missed a game. He then began working at what became his second home, Sunflower Hills Golf Course in 2004where again, he seldom missed a game. Some of Leos favorite passions were spending time with family and numerous friends at his cabin at Lake Pomme de Terre, traveling with Mom and cheering on the Jayhawks, Royals and Chiefswhere he and Mom even attended the Chiefs Super Bowl win in 1970.
