John Stanely Zych, Age 92, of Kansas City, Kansas peacefully passed away on February 5th, 2023. He was surrounded by his loving family members. Services will be on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Christ the King Church, 3024 North 53rd Street, Kansas City, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9-11am followed with a mass of Christian burial at 11am. John was born in Kansas City, Kansas to Alexander and Josephine Zych, attending St. Benedict’s grade school and Bishop Ward High School, graduating in 1949. There he was a 2 sport All-Metro performer in football and basketball. he was a beloved younger brother to Alex and Walt Zych. He served in the Army and played on a select Army baseball team. He married his sweetheart Mary Jane Holmes and was devoted to her for over 65 years in marriage before her passing in June, 2022. They were blessed with 9 children which kept John active in church and school activities, CYO Sports, often coaching his sons’ teams. He was always proud of the players he coached over the years. John was soft spoken, humble, and a devout Catholic. He showed tremendous strength throughout his entire life even to his final breath.
John worked as a cable splicer for Southwestern Bell for 30 years retiring in 1987. He instilled a great work ethic to his children by example. He enjoyed retirement and took painstaking effort to have the greenest lawn around-always planting and rearranging his flowers that were so very special to him. He enjoyed painting houses and visiting with friends over coffee. John was proud of his heritage , always up for traditional Polish dishes and family gatherings as his family grew. “Papa” could always be found tinkering around his garage, shed or in his chair reading his beloved paper and loyally watching the Royals, Chiefs or KU games. He was Bishop Miege’s biggest basketball fan!
John was a remarkable provider and he and Mary Jane built a lasting legacy of faith, dedication, loyalty and family that will live onward! He is survived by his family which included 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. John is survived by his children: daughter Nancy Nahajzer, granddaughter Hilary (Matt) Cindrich, Nora and Johnny Cindrich; son Gary (Kellie), granddaughter Meghan (John) Plankers, Zeke Plankers and granddaughter Molly Zych; son Rick (Laura), granddaughter Natalie (Justin) Ellrich, Taylor and Tanner, granddaughter Allison(Tim) Zande, Addison, Graham, Parker, grandson Erik (Jacey), granddaughter Lindsay (Lucas) Franco; son Nick (Elaine), grandson Nicholas and grandson Noah; Caroline (Tim)Mahoney, granddaughter Ashley, Maxyn Grover and Joey, granddaughter Amber ( Hank) Martens, grandson Timmy and fiancé Sheridan , grandson Zach (Jamie); son Chris (Carrie), grandson Hayden, grandson Brock; Lori (Ken) Winzer, grandson Jared and granddaughter Mary; Jill (Chad) Streeter, grandson Jake Conklin, grandson Josh Conklin; Cathy (Steve) Wolf, granddaughter Kelsey, granddaughter Madeline, grandson Luke.
