Joan was born November 17, 1929 in School Hill, Wisconsin to Nicholas and Catherine (Koenig) Binversie. She was number 8 of 13 siblings that grew up and worked the family farm. She met her husband, Elmer Nilges while visiting her brother in Texas. They then married in 1950 and moved to the Kansas City area. Joan became a mom in April of 1951 and then proceeded to have 12 children. Alan (m. Martha), Dennis, Wayne (m. Julie), Stephen, Dale (m. Ruth), Ramona (m. Russell), Beverly (m. Billy), Anita, Ron (m. Lana), Marcie, Brian, (m. Lori), and Kevin (m. Jennifer). She set a great example of being a mom through her baking and cooking skills. Everyone remembers her German Potato Salad, Chili (with or without macaroni or rice), Ponhaus, burritos, fried chicken, homemade noodles and her amazing sides mainly consisting of her apple fruit salad with the colorful marshmallows. She also baked, and baked a ton. So many cookies that everyone will remember sour cream cookies, molasses cookies and orange raisin cookies. She loved baking bread, whether it be a good old fashioned loaf of white bread, povitica, cinnamon rolls and banana bread. Later she made that banana bread even more amazing by adding chocolate chips. Her and Elmer had a huge garden with which the extra foods not being used to feed the immediate family at that time, she spent an enormous amount of time canning those vegetables. She has spread her love for cooking and baking to her sons and daughters, who all try to replicate the recipe and taste, but few actually succeed. Everyone is always asking for who has which recipe and how can we all get it. Fortunately, one of her many grandchildren, Stephanie, put together a binder for each of the sons and daughters to have and to pass on to our own children. Each of the grandchildren have special memories of Mom (grandma) and most involve either one of her dinners or desserts. She really just enjoyed having her family around her, the earlier years as the older grandchildren were growing up, it was an every Sunday event. Later, it was mainly just the holidays, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. All the grandchildren love having the excuse to get together with their cousins and running around Grandmas house, whether it be the older house with the many areas they werent allowed to go or the newer house with the empty basement and big yard. In her few moments of free time, she enjoyed doing Word Searches, reading Womans Day and Harlequin romance books. She loved listening to country music and Lawrence Welk. She enjoyed watching Bonanza, Hee-Haw, Wheel of Fortune, Andy Griffith, and secretly which she probably wouldnt acknowledge, but she did watch a lot of Jerry Springer.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, two sons, Dennis and Stephen, three Grandchildren, Nathan, Luke, and Katie Beth; both parents, and several siblings (Alfred, Myra, Art, Ted, Leander, Bernard, Monica, and Pat. She is survived by 10 children, 42 grandchildren, and 60 great grandchildren and counting, and her remaining siblings, Cecilia, Agnes, Betty and Dominic.
