Fernando ‘Fred’ Sanchez, passed away May 16, 2024 at Morningside Place in Overland Park, Kansas. He was surrounded by his family. Fred was born February 23, 1947 to Guadalupe and Luz (Cuevas) Sanchez in Kansas City, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Agapito ‘Papapito’ Sanchez and Luz Maria (Fuentes) Sanchez, aunt Librada, and sister and brother-in-law Celia and Sam Hurtado. He is survived by brothers Agapito (Rita) Sanchez, Joe (Naomi) Sanchez, and Bob Sanchez and sisters Librada (Henry) Romero and Lucy Martel. He enjoyed his nephews, nieces and friends.
His early childhood was filled with many interests. His mother was not too happy about his cage full of pigeons and later rabbits. She was also not too happy about his motorcycle, but later he convinced her that purchasing a used Triumph TR3 sports car was a good idea. Fred began his education at St. Thomas Grade School, graduated from Bishop Ward High School, attended Donnelly College and Kansas State University, and graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute. He began showing his work at the Lawrence Gallery Of Westport. Sid Lawrence, the director, was instrumental in his development by being supportive of his early efforts. Another key figure of support was Dr. Alexander Glickman, formerly of the Leningrad’s Hermitage Museum and the University of Kansas. Fred’s work can also be found in the Denman Collection in Great Bend, Kansas. He used his skill as an artist to paint many renderings that he sold at art shows, and many of his paintings can be found in the homes of family, friends and relatives. A quote from Fred’s writings: “my basic intent is simply to create a beautiful canvas, and to give something back to the world.” In 2003, Fred suffered a brain aneurysm. His doctors did not give the family much hope of recovery but the family never gave up hope, and someone was always at his bedside. Fred’s recovery was a miracle. His three sisters looked after him until his passing. He will be greatly missed by his family. We love you, Fernando.
