Edward J. Vardyan, age 88, of Redondo Beach, California, passed peacefully on May 16, 2017 at Menorah Medical Center. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 22 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 708 N. 4th, Kansas City, KS, 66101, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Kansas City, KS. The family requests no flowers but would be thankful for contributions to St. John the Baptist Church or Strawberry Hill Museum and Cultural Center, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, KS 66101.
Edward was born on March 23, 1929 in Kansas City, KS and graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1948. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 and served in the Korean War. After his military service, he attended Kansas City University and then worked at TWA Airlines in Kansas City and Los Angeles, California for 40 years in various management positions. Edward will be celebrated as a devoted son and brother, a joyful and adored uncle, and a compassionate and loyal friend. He will be remembered for his creativity, generosity, charisma, and wonderful ability to light up a room with his storytelling and laughter.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Marko and Anna Vardyan; his brother, William Vardyan; his sisters Marie and Dorothy Vardyan; and his brother-in-laws, Thomas Mahurin and Henry Tutera. Edward is survived by his sisters, Helen (Vardyan) Mahurin and Josephine (Vardyan) Tutera; his brothers, Joseph and Kenneth Vardyan; his niece Tina Flaherty and her husband Mark and son Josh; and his niece, Anna Marie Tutera and her husband Caleb and sons Henry and Roman. Edward also leaves other relatives and friends in Kansas City, California, and Canada.
The family would like to extend a special acknowledgement and thank you to Monsignor Robert Gregory for his devotion and guidance, and to Dr. Marie Delcambre for her professional care. Edwards family and friends will dearly miss him and will carry his love and light in their hearts.
