Cruz C. Quirarte, a proud Korean War veteran, beloved father, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024 at the age of 92. Born on May 2, 1932 in Kansas City, Kansas to Donaciano and Lucina Quirarte. Cruz grew up with three brothers David, Anthony, and Jesse.
Cruz dedicated his life to serving his country and supporting his family. He joined the Navy and served 4 years active duty on the USS Saint Paul during the Korean war and 4 years in the inactive reserves. Following his service, he met and married Carmen Santoyo, the love of his life for over 40 years and they raised 4 children. Cruz continued his service as a federal employee. He worked for the Social Security Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, and retired from the US Treasury Financial Management Service after 30 years of service. He was a life long member of the Holy Name of Jesus parish and treasured his faith and parish community.
Cruz is predeceased by his parents Donaciano and Lucina, wife Carmen, and brothers David and Anthony. He is survived by his brother Jesse, daughter Cecilia Quirarte-Ortiz (husband Charlie, children Joshua, Cecilia-Marie, Daniel, Leon, Joel, and 10 great grandchildren); daughter Carol Bahr (husband Jay, and children Janelle, Jacob, Christina, and Rebecca, 1 great grandchild on the way); son Cruz Quirarte Jr (children Carmen, Kaitlin, and Madison, 4 great grandchildren); and son Carl Quirarte (wife Denise, children Michael and Amber). Cruz instilled in his children the values of hard work and family and his legacy will live on through them.
Cruz enjoyed sports and was an avid fan of the Chiefs, Royals, and KU. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and often shared stories about his family experiences, Mexican American heritage, and service during the war.
Family and friends are invited to share their memories and honor his remarkable journey. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Holy Name Catholic Church.
