Gene, as Mary referred to Cecil, was a life-long resident of KCK. While working at the 5 & 10, F.W. Woolworths Store, he met Mary Klepac before enlisting in the Marine Corp where he served as a MP in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war, he returned home to marry Mary, and raised their eight children. After 42 years of working at General Motors, he retired.
As a father, Gene would turn any holiday into the best day ever with his talent to be the greatest Santa and Easter Bunny. He spent many Halloweens making costumes for his children as well as for himself. Among some of his interests, he enjoyed traveling, taking family camping trips throughout the United States. He took his family from New York's Niagara Falls, to the Great Lakes, and across to the Rain Forest in the state of Washington, down to the Grand Canyon and across the Rocky Mountains, and to the Gulf of Mexico and many other places in between. As the children left the home he and Mary continued to travel across the seas to Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy and Croatia. They cruised the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, and Alaska, and flew to Hawaii. His love of dancing took him and Mary too many local polka dances and later to follow Don Lipovac's band. Gene was active in the Catholic Church by ushering, singing in the choir, and counting money at St. Anthony's and St. Patrick's Churches. His green thumb, would make his home look like a botanical garden, with the most unusual and beautiful flowers. Many meals included his fresh produce from his vegetable gardens. He was not bashful to help Mary in the kitchen, preparing meals from her cookbook and displaying his food art made from fruits and vegetables.
He was loved and will be greatly missed.
