Bernie grew up in Turner and graduated from Turner High School in 1956 and from Emporia State University in 1960 and began his 30- year career in banking. He then traded in his suit and tie for jeans and plaid shirts to embark on his own business venture, MediTran, a medical transportation company. This new occupation helped instill in him compassion for the elderly, the sick and the poor. When his mother and mother-in-law were ill and in a senior facility he faithfully visited them daily. For years, he enjoyed and supported his grandchildren in school activities and sporting events. No venue was too far away. The Children’s Museum and children’s theater were favorites of them all.
He loved the outdoors especially while hunting and fishing, and passed this passion on to kids and grandchildren. He loved to travel and visited Ireland, Italy, England and Germany. In retirement, bus trips and cruises were high on his list of leisure-time activities. In high school he learned woodworking and continued this craft into adulthood. He overcame multiple health issues but never complained and always tried to make others laugh. He loved his fried chicken, especially the gizzards at Go Chicken Go. His favorite food was pie, and he didn't have a favorite. Just as long as it was spelled P. I. E. The ultimate DIY guy, he could fix anything. He was never late, always 15 minutes early. Bernie was a faithful member of St. Patrick Parish for 57 years. During that time, he served as an usher, president of the Parish Council and president of the PTO. He served his country and community as a member of the Kansas National Guard and as lifetime member of Optimist International.
