Beatrice Munoz Mejia, born February 8, 1928, died August 25, 2023, was the daughter of Eduardo Munoz and Maria Elizondo Munoz. She grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1945, met Manuel Salazar Mejia when he returned from the war in Europe, and was married at Mount Carmel Catholic Church on June 2, 1946.
They were blessed with four children. Husband Manuel died November 17, 2004. Beatrice was also preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter Mary Elizabeth, sisters Lilia Ortiz, Betty Chavez, Maude Espinosa, Josephine Villa and brothers, Hector Munoz, Thomas Espinosa, Joe Espinosa, and Arthur Guiterrez. She is survived by her three children, son Rene’ Mejia and wife Mary Mejia, son Dr. Ronald Mejia, daughter BeaMarie Mayer and husband Stephen Mayer and their children and grandchildren; three grandchildren, Erica Mejia (Scott Nolf), Andrea Gabaldon (Jesse Gabaldon), Benjamin Mejia (Megan Mejia) and six great grandchildren - Gabriela Gabaldon, Nicholas Gabaldon, Veronica Gabaldon, Mila Mejia, Benjamin Winston Mejia and Leni Mejia, and many nieces and nephews.
As a DAV women’s auxiliary member Beatrice volunteered countless hours in the Leavenworth veteran’s hospital surgery ward. She and her young family lived a block from Blessed Sacrament Church in Kansas City, Kansas and she was actively involved in the grade school, was girl scout and boy scout leader, was a member of the altar society and took special care to launder liturgical clothes. She took special pride in her pies and turnovers.
Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 6, at St. Patrick’s Church, 1086 N 94th St, Kansas City, KS 66112, followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. Private burial services at Highland Park Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the caregivers of St. Joseph Place in Overland Park and
Good Shepherd Hospice for providing compassionate care in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Bishop Ward High School Manuel Mejia Scholarship fund or Ignatian Associates-Expansion.
